About Almora City

Almora (Kumaoni: Almaḍ) is a municipal board and a cantonment town in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is the administrative headquarters of Almora district. Almora is situated on a hill at the southern edge of the Kumaon Hills of the Himalayan range. The Koshi (Kaushiki) and Suyal (Salmale) rivers flow through the city and the snow-capped Himalayas can be seen in the background.

 

Almora was founded by Raja Kalyan Chand in 1568, however, the Hindu epic Mahabharata (8th and 9th century BCE) details human settlements in the hills and surrounding area. Almora was the seat of Chand kings who ruled the Kumaon kingdom. It is considered the cultural heart of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.

According to the provisional results of the 2011 census of India, Almora had a population of approximately 179,000. Situated within the high peaks of the Himalayas, Almora has a mild temperate climate throughout the year. Every year thousands of tourists from all over the world visit this city. There are 11 blocks (i.e. development blocks) in Almora district.
